Plea to open Old Jail complex for parking

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 7 - The Assam State unit of the All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC) has called upon the Kamrup (Metro) district administration to open the Old Jail complex at Fancy Bazar for public parking.

In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), AIPC State unit president Bolin Bordoloi and vice president Gauravv Somani said the traffic problem at Fancy Bazar has reached a chaotic stage.

Though the Old Jail complex was initially opened for public parking, the administration has closed down the complex restricting any entry of vehicles inside the jail complex. We feel that by turning the jail premises into a parking lot, much of the traffic congestion can be eased, thereby making shopping a better experience at Fancy Bazar. Lack of car parking is a major concern for everyone as there is no dedicated parking spaces at Fancy Bazar, they stated in the memorandum.

We request you to open the Old Jail premises with immediate effect for public parking at least for the months of October and November in view of the festivals of Durga Puja and Diwali to ease out the parking problem faced by the citizens, it stated.

AIPC has also asked the administration to provide designated spaces to the hawkers of Fancy Bazar so that footpaths and roads are not occupied by them to do their businesses.

Shifting all the hawkers to some other place will create more space which can be used for parking vehicles, said the memorandum.
