Plea to declare Hajo a sub-division

SUALKUCHI, March 11 � The Hajo Anchalik Students� Union has reiterated their demand for creation of Hajo subdivision comprising of the entire Hajo revenue circle with an area of 681 square kilometres.

A delegation of the students� union led by its president Imdadur Rahman and secretary Nabajyoti Das met the SDC of Hajo and submitted a memorandum to him on March 5, which was addressed to the Chief Minister.

The students� body in the memorandum accused the State Government of using delaying tactics in creation of the sub-division at Hajo and urged the Government to declare Hajo as a sub-division of Kamrup district without delay.

The student leaders threatened to launch an agitation if the Government does not pay heed to their just demand. They told this Correspondent that the people of Hajo have been demanding a sub-division for the overall wellbeing of the people of greater Hajo area, including the people living in the vast catchment areas of the Brahmaputra, with better administrative facilities.

Moreover, Hajo, once the capital of the Koch dynasty during the reign of Raghudev, was famous for its Pancha Tirtha and Powa Mecca.

It may be mentioned that the organisation named Hajo Samasti Unnayan Samiti was formed in 2011 in order to mobilise public opinion in support of the demand. A memorandum demanding Hajo subdivision was also routed to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup on January 2011, the student leaders stated.
