Plea for Golakganj subdivision

GAURIPUR, Aug 21 - The Subdivision Demand Committee of Golakganj demanding creation of a subdivision with headquarter at Golakganj submitted a memorandum to the chairman of the Cabinet sub-committee for creation of subdivisions and Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman recently in his office chamber.

The demand committee cited the necessity of creation of a subdivision recalling the historic importance of Golakganj.

The proposed area of the subdivision includes two revenue circles, namely Agomani and Golakganj and two development blocks, namely Rupshi and Hatidhura. The demand committee also cited the opening of the International Trade Centre at Golakganj by the Chief Minister a few months back.

New railway lines from Dhubri to Mainaguri were also commissioned a few months back and Glokganj has become a railway junction. Mahatma Gandhi too visited Golakganj and the people of greater Golakganj area are proud for his august visit and still remember the memorable day.

The demand committee also submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Revenue Minister on December 27, 2010, but no action has yet been taken up for consideration of creation of a subdivision at Golakganj. The memorandum was signed by NN Ray, president, Dr SK Sarkar, working president and Gadadhar Dutta, general secretary of the Subdivision Demand Committee of Golakganj.

Manasa Puja: Manasa Puja was observed on August 17 and 18 at the historic Ma Manasa temple at Golakganj with a two-day long programme.

Hundreds of devotees thronged the temple of Ma Manasa, the Goddess of Snakes and offered anjali with milk and bananas. Manasa Kirtan and narration of Padma Puran by invited troupes were the highlights of the puja rituals.

The Scouts and Guides of Chilaray College rendered valuable assistance to the devotees and a number of NGOs distributed drinking water to the thirsty devotees. Prasad was distributed among the visitors free of cost. People from all walks of life and irrespective of caste and creed attended the puja whole-heartedly.

It may be mentioned here that the Ma Manasa temple at Golakganj was established in 1977 in the sacred memory of Ganesh Chandra Ray, an employee of Dhubri-Baxirhat Bus Association, who died due to snake-bite in the residence of this correspondent, who tried his level best to save his life.
