PLA leader, 6 cadres nabbed

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 7 A self-styled second lieutenant of Peoples Liberation Army (PLA), identified as Joychandra Lairellakpam alias Abung alias Okendro, was nabbed today during a joint operation launched by City Police, Army and the CRPF. He was nabbed from Citys Christianbasti area along with six other suspected cadres of the outfit.

Aged about 32 years, Joychandra, according to police, has been taking shelter in the capital city for the last few days.

As per the latest information, Joychandra was planning to get married to a Guwahati-based girl and the house from where he was arrested in Christianbasti area belonged to one of his close allies, police said. The arrests were made under Dispur police station.

A senior Assam Police official informed that the operation was launched based on the inputs gathered by the Army and the CRPF.

There are reports about sneaking in of more Manipur-based militants to the city and we are trying to track them as well, the official said.

Guwahati, it may be mentioned, has emerged as a shelter for the Manipur-based militant groups in the aftermath of an intensified counter-insurgency operation against them in the neighbouring States.

Figures available with the Assam Police revealed that over 40 Manipur-based militants had been arrested from in and around Guwahati by security forces in the last two years.

In most of the cases, it has been found that the militants manage to get rented accommodation in the city without any hassles. They stay here in the guise of a common man and operate from here. We appeal to the landlords to verify the identity of a person before providing him or her rented accommodation, the senior Assam Police official added.
