DIPHU, Aug 26 - Giving a much-needed breather to Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of BJP-led Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), the Gauhati High Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation filed by District Welfare Society, a Howraghat-based NGO on Thursday.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Sing and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of Gauhati High Court disposed of the PIL ( No. 107/2015) stating that there is no substantial evidence of corruption charges against the officials of Irrigation department as alleged.

The District Welfare Society, had filed the PIL in 2015 alleging corruption by the Irrigation department officials, working under KAAC, in executing the Centrally-subsidised Accelerated Irrigation Beneficiary Programme (AIBP) schemes in 2013-14, when Ronghang was the CEM for the first term.

The NGO charged the KAAC of embezzling Rs 71,76,895 while implementing 386 minor schemes in various places of the KAAC administered areas during 2013-14 financial year. The High Court constituted a high-power technical committee on March 17, 2017 for field verification of the projects. On May 24, 2017 the committee submitted its report to the court.

Based on the technical committees report, the court disposed of the PIL. Meanwhile, responding to corruption charges against the KAAC, the Comptroller & Auditor General also conducted a performance audit and submitted a positive report last month.
