BONGAIGAON, April 1 - Phani Bhusan Chaudhury, six-time AGP legislator and the candidate of the AGP-BJP combine in Bongaigaon Assembly Constituency, is likely to face a tough contest from Independent contender Dr Itesh Bordoloi, dissident BJP workers here claimed.
The majority of BJP workers had earlier sought a candidate from their own party against the Congress and the AGP in Bongaigaon constituency. We had wanted our own candidate to win the Bongaigaon seat by defeating AGP legislator Phani Bhusan Chaudhury in the ensuing Assembly polls, but the alliance between the two parties ruined such a prospect, said local BJP workers.
So, as an opponent to Chaudhury, the majority of the BJP workers and aides here have come out in support of Dr Bordoloi, a paediatrician. Now our choice is Dr Itesh Bordoloi, who was an active BJP worker before filing his nomination as an Independent candidate for the seat, said disgruntled BJP workers at an election meeting here on Thursday.
There are some villages in the constituency which do not have roads and bridges, proper educational infrastructure, employment avenues, sound healthcare service, etc. The poor rural voters, who are the deciding factor for the seat, want a fresh representative and hence, they will vote for me, claimed Dr Bordoloi. He added that his main rival in the poll contest would be Phani Bhusan Chaudhury.
