Petroleum workers go on strike

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 20 - Petroleum workers under the banner of the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union today went on an indefinite strike demanding minimum wages and other benefits.

Scores of workers staged a sit-in protest from 10 am to 1 pm at the IOC office here, but after no senior officer turned up to lend an ear to their grievances, the union decided to go ahead with the indefinite strike that was threatened from today.

However, the union has decided that LPG cylinder carrying vehicles and workers related to it will be kept out of the purview of the strike as the stir was not against the common people.

Leaders of the union said that during a bipartite meeting on November 4 last, the managements had agreed to implement the demands of the workers related to payment of minimum wages, PF and ESI benefits.
