Personal enmity, property behind witch-hunting

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 6 Dr Birubala Rabha, crusader against witch-hunting, today said that the scourge which had attained disturbing dimensions in the State was largely attributable to personal enmity and property disputes.

Addressing a gathering at the Karmashree Hiteswar Saikia College as part of a lecture programme held under the aegis of the colleges Education Department, Dr Rabha said that both the Government and society had a big role to play to eradicate the evil.

The scourge of witch-hunting is deep-rooted in our society and a concerted action from all concerned including the Government and society is a must to strike at the root of the evil. A blot on society, the widespread practice of witch-hunting nowadays actually has more to do with property disputes and personal enmity in interior places, she said.

Dr Rabha also had an interactive session with the students of the college. Earlier, Dr Sikhamoni Konwar, Principal, gave the welcome address, while Dr Daisy Nath Choudhury, Associate Professor, Dept of Education, gave an account of the life and activities of Dr Rabha.
