Permission for inter-country adoption

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 5 Though many childless couples in the State are coming forward to adopt a child shaking aside earlier prejudices and inhibitions, not many are keen to accept a child that has some special needs.

Children with special needs rarely find a home and all the love and care they need. However with Shishu Greha of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW), Guwahati getting the permission for inter country adoption, children with special needs have now got a hope of finding a home and love.

Authorized by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), under the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, Government of India, Shishu Greha, ICCW, is already getting responses from overseas childless couples after its inter country adoption permit.

We are a recognized Indian placement agency. We are already into the process of getting two of our Shishu Greha children adopted by overseas couple, said Anamika Das, coordinator.

It needs to be mentioned here that these two children, aged three and half and one and half have special needs. Das said that overseas adoption has several advantages and one of them is finding a home for the children with special needs.

Couples from Assam express their interest to adopt a healthy child only. Those children that have some physical and intellectual problems are always ignored, said Das adding that a change in the perception of the childless couples of Assam would take a long time.

Overseas couples on the other hand, take it as a privilege if they can provide a home and all the necessary care and love to someone with special needs or someone who is very ill.

Shishu Greha at present has 22 children, and 13 out of the 22 are children with special needs. Several are intellectually challenged, and some are physically challenged.

Now we can look forward to ensuring a loving home to these children with special needs. Inter country adoption has come as a boon for the children with special needs, mentioned Das.
