Per capita debt burden of State Rs 8385: Govt

GUWAHATI, March 5 � The per capita debt burden of Assam as of March, 2011 is Rs 8385, said Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a written answer to a question by Phani Bhushan Choudhury (AGP) in the State Assembly today.

Sarma, who was replying on behalf of the Chief Minister, said that the total debt burden of the State as on March 31 last year was Rs 25495.28 crore. He said that the Government has prepared a roadmap for repaying the debt and the consolidated sinking fund has been restructured. During the period from 1999-2000 to 2010-2011, the Government managed to deposit an amount of Rs 1167.32 crore in the consolidated sinking fund. However, the amount deposited in the fund is yet to be utilized by the State Government and the same would be used to repay the loans if necessary in future.

The Minister said that the financial position of the State is now stable and as of February 29, the total deposit in the Reserve Bank of India is Rs 8866.21 crore, while the amount kept in the revenue deposit is Rs 8198.48 crore.
