PepsiCo India to invest Rs 400 cr in State

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Feb 26 - PepsiCo India has proposed to set up a Rs 400-crore greenfield project for manufacturing Lays potato chips and Kurkure corn puffs in Assam.

A delegation of PepsiCo India led by its government affairs chief Viraj Chouhan called on Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary here today.

Informing about the proposal, the PepsiCo officials stated that the company would engage in contract farming (buyback policy) whereby it would provide seeds to farmers and buy back matured farm produce from them. The company will also provide handholding support to the farmers.

Right now, PepsiCo India has been working with over 24,000 farmers in 13 states of India.

Assuring support, Patowary said his department would take initiative with the State agriculture department so that PepsiCo can directly train the farmers. The minister instructed department officials to ensure faster clearances so that the project can be executed at the earliest.
