People fed up with 15-yr Cong rule: Mahanta

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 25 - Claiming that the new Government would be formed in the State by the BJP and its alliance, former Chief Minister and AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today said that a political change, as desired by the people of Assam, was imminent in the State.

Mahanta claimed that the people of Assam were miffed with the 15 years of misrule under the Congress Government and this was evident in the huge number of voters turnout during both the phases of elections.

In both the phases of elections, there was a spontaneous response from the people of Assam, despite the substandard political practices adopted by the ruling Congress. The voters were both lured and intimidated for political gains by the Congress. Specially during the second phase of the elections, the ruling party resorted to communal politics, Mahanta alleged in a statement.

Further criticising the Congress for trying to cover up its failures with advertisements and campaigns, he said that people are conscious enough to understand such tricks.

The new Government would have to work tirelessly for the overall development of the State and address its burning issues on a priority basis from the very beginning. The BJP as a major party of the alliance would have to play a key role in this regard, Mahanta said, adding that the State Assembly election this time was a battle for protecting the identity of the indigenous people of Assam.

The AGP also condoled the death of Purna Sarma, a founding member of the party and a resident of Bihali in Sonitpur district. Party president Atul Bora and senior leader Prafulla Mahanta conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family members.
