HAILAKANDI, Sept 29 - In order to maintain peace and harmony among various communities in Hailakandi, the district administration has initiated various steps throughout the district.
A peace procession was taken out in Hailakandi town on Monday involving all sections of people. It was organized in connection with the clashes in Silchar�s Meherpur area following recovery of objectionable items in the premises of temples in Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
Earlier, a meeting was also organized at the DC�s office here and the people were urged to maintain peace and harmony in the district. The meeting was addressed by the Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuya, police super Rajen Singha, president of Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sanmilan, Nitish Bhattacharjee, president of Bharatiya Janata Party district committee, Kshitish Ranjan Paul, president of district Congress-I committee, Ashoke Duttagupta, president of AIUDF district committee, Nurul Haque Mazumdar, CPI (M)�s Narayan Debnath, Maulana Sarimul Haque Laskar, principal of Hailakandi Women�s College, Bijoy Kumar Dhar, among others. All the speakers urged the people to maintain calm.
Meanwhile, the police arrested 250 BJP supporters for picketing in different places of Hailakandi district as part of 12-hour Barak Valley bandh called by the BJP in protest against the harassment to party�s MLA and leaders and lathicharge on women members of the party in Silchar on Saturday. The bandh was total in Hilakandi and no untoward incident happened in any part of the district. All the picketers were released in the evening.
