Patient plunges to death from Bethany Hospital building

SHILLONG, April 15: A patient of Bethany Hospital Shillong, identified as Tainingstar Jyrwa (26), committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping out of the window of his ward into the stream flowing next to the hospital.

It can be noted here that the hospital has grabbed headlines after one of its doctors tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday.

Clarifying on this, Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Khasi Hills district, Claudia A Lyngwa said the death of the man was not linked to the COVID-19 issue.

�There is nothing to relate his suicide with the events regarding COVID-19 and the public are advised to refrain from spreading any misinformation /rumour regarding the same,� Lyngwa said on Tuesday.

The police officer also said that at around 9 am on Tuesday, Bethany Hospital authorities informed Laitumkhrah Police Station that one of their in-patients Tainingstar Jyrwa, husband of Iadalin Marbaniang, who resides at Mawkyrwat under South West Khasi Hills district, had committed suicide by jumping from the window of his ward into the stream flowing next to the hospital.

The police officer said that immediate inquiry was conducted by the staff of Laitumkhrah Police Station.

The officer also informed that Jyrwa was admitted to Bethany Hospital on March 30 as he was a drug addict and needed psychiatric care.
