Parts of Barpeta district severely hit by floods

BARPETA, Oct 1 - Floods have created havoc in the north-eastern part of Barpeta district where rivers like Pahumara, Kaldia, Tihu and Burhadia are in spate and nearly one lakh people have been affected since the last one week. Road communication has been snapped in several places and embankments have also been breached.

Kaldia has washed away its embankment at Saldah near Kawaimary which has submerged about 20 villages. Villages like Kawaimari, Nij Saldah, Ghoramara, Barshimla, Bhathuartari, Balapara, Bamunkuchi, Santipur, Kawaimari Reserve, Kawaimari 2 No Block, Kawaimari 12 No Block, Saribhitha, Bagemari, Khairartari, Jayantipur, Neularbhitha have been severely affected by the breach of Kaldia embankment.

Kawaimari Balapara road, Barshimla Nij Saldah road have been submerged by the rising waters of Kaldia . Burhadia has breached its embankment at Kalatali affecting villages like Kalatali, Batia, Gomura, Karakuchi , Nasatra, Satra Paka and Sarthebari town.

The Bhaktardaba-Kayakuchi road has been submerged by the Pahumara flood and parts of it have also been washed away. Pithadi Gaon, Pithadi Pam, Nalir Pathar, Nalir Pam, Naligaon, Kayakuchi Gaon, Kayakuchi Pam, Kayakuchi Pathar, Teleria, Jalkara, Gumirpathar, Pani Maricha, Bheragaon, Bhoukamari Ata and several other villages are facing the fury of floods.

Till now nearly one lakh people of 50 villages have been affected. Crop area of about 30 hectares has been damaged. Farmers are the worst-affected community. Paddy cultivation was at its peak time and a good harvest was expected this year because of the absence of floods in early summer.

The backbone of this area has been broken by the recurring floods every year. Embankments in several parts of Tihu, Burhadia, Kaldia and Pahumara were in vulnerable state and people have demanded their repairing and protection.
