DHUBRI, Dec 16 - Although the dates for the panchayat elections in the State have not yet been declared, all the major political parties in Dhubri district have already started their preparations for the same.

Currently, 16 out of 29 Zila Parishad seats are with the AIUDF while Congress, BJP, AGP and Independent candidates share the rest of the 13 seats. However, this year looking at the current socio-political equations in the State, all political parties are planning to win over the hearts of the voters by focusing on different local, State and national issues.

While talking about their preparations for the ensuing panchyat elections, the members of different political parties admitted that this time the elections will be different since issues have changed and the voters have become more socially and politically conscious and are aware of different issues at the State and national levels.

The ruling AIUDF claims that in the ensuing elections they will make a clean sweep. The Congress has no support among any section of the people in the district, and BJP has hurt the small time traders and the common people with its demonetisation and GST moves, said Masood Zaman, spokesperson of AIUDF, Dhubri. He also added, Moreover, Badruddin Ajmal is being appreciated by many due to his stand on the NRC update process and the Supreme Court allowing panchayat certificate as a proof linkage in NRC update. Apart from this, in his recent 10-day tour for generating awareness about the NRC programme in various villages of the district, the AIUDF supremo has won the hearts of many, which will definitely have a effect on the poll results.

Meanwhile, the BJP has already published a Panchayat Election Management Committee List for the District and has been organising rallies in different parts of the district. On their recent visit to Dhubri, BJP State president Ranjit Kumar Dass and Member of Parliament from Mangaldai constituency Ramen Deka met party workers and encouraged them to take over the Zila Parishad office.

The huge success of our recent rally at Dharmashala area is itself a proof of our victory in the elections, said Deepak Kumar Saha, who also added that the developmental works by the two BJP MLAs of the district, Aswini Roy Sarkar and Ashok Kumar Singhi, will help in garnering a large number of votes for the party. Saha also added that the partys single-point agenda for the elections will be development.

On the other hand, the Dhubri District Congress Committee is urging the people to vote against price rise and for real development. In all our booth-level meetings that we conducted recently, we have urged the voters to discard the communal forces and vote for real development, said Uttam Sarkar, president of District Congress. Sarkar also added that the people have been closely watching the recent works of both AIUDF and BJP at panchayat, State and national levels. We are sure that no one is satisfied with their performance. People have seen that their living standards have not improved at all. Performance of both the AIUDF and the BJP will work as a positive campaign for us and the people will definitely go for the Congress, he added.
