Parties condemn arrest

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 24 The arrest of RTI activist and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) general secretary Akhil Gogoi on Friday triggered sharp reaction from different political parties and organizations.

Condemning the arrest, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) described the development as reflective of the Congress governments plan to silent all voices of protest.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh while criticizing the governments move, said that such a step was against the democratic tradition of the country. Akhil Gogoi has become the victim of government conspiracy as he has been raising the peoples issues and highlighting the rampant corruption of the government, the party said adding that it was against the principle of justice to arrest Gogoi before the submission of the report by the committee instituted to probe into the June 22 incident.

Meanwhile the All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Unnati Sabha and Asom Sena condemning the arrest of Gogoi warned that the government would not be successful in silencing the democratic movements through such an act.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) too has condemned the arrest of Gogoi terming it as fascist attitude of the government.

Our Spl Correspondent from New Delhi adds: PUDR condemned the arrest of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi terming it arbitrary and undemocratic.

PUDR demands that the Assam Government immediately withdraw the cases lodged against Gogoi and release him immediately. Additionally, we demand that the government recognise the rights and livelihoods of the thousands of people who live in the hills and wetlands around Guwahati city and stop its eviction drive.

NGOs and RTI activists in Delhi are planning to stage demonstration to protest his detention. An activist told newsmen that they are planning to stage a rally either at India Gate or the JNU Campus here on Saturday.
