GUWAHATI, Feb 29 Director General of Assam Police JN Choudhury today said that investigators have stumbled upon leads indicating towards involvement of Paresh Baruah faction of ULFA in Tuesday evenings grenade blast, something which has been virtually corroborated by forensic experts.

We are working on the leads and we are hopeful that very soon the culprits would be brought to book, the DGP said.

There were some intelligence inputs suggesting that the outfit were desperate to make its presence felt, Choudhury claimed.

Forensic experts revealed that the grenade lobbed on Tuesday evening is mostly used by ULFA.

On todays meeting with the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, the DGP said that he had sought assistance from the government to strengthen the infrastructure of Assam Police.

We also stressed the need for implementing welfare schemes in upper Assam where Maoists activities are gaining ground, Choudhury said after coming out from the meeting at Raj Bhavan.

He further added that Assam Police has sought rehabilitation package for the militants who had surrendered between 1998 and 2005.

The number should be around 7,000 and we have asked for financial package to rehabilitate them, Choudhury added.
