GUWAHATI, Dec 16 - The Government of Assam has constituted an inquiry committee to probe the alleged suicidal deaths of farmers in Assam since 2001.

The one-man inquiry committee is headed by VB Pyarelal, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Department. The governments attention has been drawn to media reports that 3,908 farmers have allegedly committed suicide in Assam since 2001.

The inquiry committee will probe whether such incidents of suicidal death of farmers have occurred in the State since 2001, besides finding out the sequence of such suicidal deaths of farmers, if any, and the causes thereof. Along with probing any other matter relevant to the inquiry, the committee will also suggest preventive measures to avert such recurrence if such incidents have taken place.

The inquiry committee will submit its report within 30 days from the date of issuance of the notification, said an official release.
