Panel to probe bogus family identity cards

GUWAHATI, Feb 13 � The Commission of Inquiry, headed by former Justice PG Agarwal, has issued an order regarding the probe to inquire into the matter of circulation of huge number of bogus Family Identity (FI) cards that has resulted in siphoning off crores of rupees from the State exchequer by unscrupulous traders in collusion with Government officials from the State Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department.

The commission has issued the order stating that it will now require any individual, aggrieved person, institutions, associations, organizations or unions to submit memorandums, representations, affidavits, etc., stating the relevant facts in writing in triplicate on or before March 15, 2013, an official release said.

The relevant facts can be submitted at the office of Commission at Room No. 29, Circuit House, Guwahati or at office of the Secretary of the Inquiry Commission and Deputy Secretary to the Government of Assam, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department.

The terms of reference of the commission of inquiry are to inquire into the bogus FI cards issue of the collusion of unscrupulous traders with government officials of the department and unearth the PDS scam in the State since the year 1991, inquire into the fund flow and manner for issue of FI cards, to ascertain the involvement of government officials, persons, organizations, etc., in diversions of PDS items issued against bogus cards, to fix responsibility against the erring officials, to examine the measures taken by the department to check and weed out the bogus FI cards, to suggest measures to check such fraudulent issue of FI cards, and PDS scam and also any other matter relevant to the inquiry as may be decided by the commission, the release added.
