Panel to check mortality of wild animals planned

KAZIRANGA, Aug 17 - The Assam Forest and Environment Minister, Pramila Rani Brahma, during a press meet at Bagori here on Wednesday said that a survey committee will be formed soon after floodwaters begin to recede in Kaziranga National Park to find out possible measures which can be adopted to check mortality of wild animals in the park.

She said that the committee will be under the chairmanship of NK Yadav, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Assam. This committee will look into all the aspects to see the kind of steps that can be adopted to ensure safety of wild animals during heavy floods in Kaziranga in future.

She said that the construction work of highlands was supposed to be completed before the onset of monsoon season this year. But the unpredictable weather conditions that prevailed since early period this year hampered the work.

Till now, five rhinos died in the flood. Another five rhinos are under treatment at CWRC in Kaziranga. More than 74 hog deer died in the flood too.
