NEW DELHI, Dec 23 - Following opposition to imposition of AFSPA in Meghalaya, the Centre has constituted a Committee under Secretary (Internal Security) to assess security situation in Garo Hills of the State, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said in Lok Sabha.
A number of representations have been received from various organisations and individuals requesting the Centre not to extend Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, he disclosed.
The High Court of Meghalaya on November 2 last, directed the Central Government to consider the use of AFSPA and deployment of armed and para-military forces in the Garo Hills to control the fast deteriorating law and order situation.
