GUWAHATI, Feb 10 - The high level committee constituted by the Central government for suggesting measures for implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord has completed its report.
�The committee has completed its task and all the members have signed the report. The report is complete and ready,� member of the committee and senior journalist Wasbir Hussain said.
It has not yet been decided when the report would be submitted to the Central government.
Hussain said the committee was mandated with a task which has been completed within the stipulated time-frame, although a month�s extension was given which was to expire on February 15.
The members did not disclose the content, but said the nearly-150 page report has the definition of �Assamese people� and has a number of recommendations for effective implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
The 13-member committee headed by Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma was constituted in July last year to examine the effectiveness of actions taken since 1985 to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and to assess the appropriate level of reservation of seats in Assam Legislative Assembly and local bodies for the indigenous people. The committee was tasked to recommend the appropriate level of reservation in employment under the Government of Assam for the Assamese people. It was asked to suggest any other measures as may be necessary to protect, preserve and promote cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
During the exercise, the committee sought suggestions from different organizations and individuals and more than a thousand individuals and organizations submitted petitions. Views of political parties were also sought. Members of the committee also visited different parts of the State including Kokrajhar, Silchar, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Diphu, Haflong etc to meet cross sections of people and organizations to obtain their views.
