Panel formed to deal with fake currency

GUWAHATI, June 25 � A committee comprising personnel from the BSF, SSB, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and different branches of the Assam Police has been formed to deal with the problem of fake currency rackets. The committee was formed in a meeting held at the Assam Police headquarters under the chairmanship of Director General of Assam Police, JN Choudhury.

Initiating the discussion today, the DGP said that all the concerned agencies should work together to bust the gangs involved in the fake currency racket. He called upon the officials of the RBI to issue samples of Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) so that the police and security forces can identify it.

The SSP, CID, Debraj Upadhya gave a presentation on the FICN seizures in different parts of the State. He said that in Dhubri district so far this year, 205 pieces of fake currency notes of Rs 1000 denomination were recovered, while, 419 pieces of notes of Rs 500 denomination were seized. In Guwahati city, 258 pieces of Rs1000 denomination, 235 pieces of Rs 500 denomination and 174 pieces of Rs 100 denomination were recovered and six persons were arrested.
