KOKRAJHAR, Jan 10 � Assam Police�s most wanted NDFB(S) militant and one of the prime accused in the killing of Adivasis at Pakriguri and other places in Kokrajhar, Jagat Basumatary alias B Jwblang, a self-styled platoon commander of the outfit, was killed this afternoon in an encounter with Kokrajhar police near North Khausibazar forest area under Serfanguri Police Station in Kokrajhar, informed Additional Superintendent of Police Kokrajhar, Surjeet Sing Panesar.
Police also recovered an AK-56 rifle with a magazine, two hand grenades, twenty- one rounds of live ammunition and eighteen empty fire cases from the spot, he said.
ASP Panesar informed that after receiving secret information regarding movements of Jagat along with some other cadres in the area, a team of Assam Police and SSB led by him this afternoon carried out a search operation in the forest area, where the encounter subsequently took place. He informed that the other militants managed to escape under the cover of thick forest. The police had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for the capture of Jagat.
Tezpur Correspondent adds: In a major success of the ongoing �Operation All Out� against the NDFB(S), police and security forces apprehended the mastermind of the December 23 NDFB(S) carnage in Biswanath Charilai last night from Balisang-Simangpuri area under Balisang Police Outpost. Biswanath Chariali SP Manabendra Ray said the apprehended person has been identified as Samabaru Basumatary. He had prepared the plan for the carnage in which as many as 36 innocent Adivasi people were killed.
The militants have been hiding in the areas near the Assam-Arunachal border after the carnage. However, the SP said that as per the confessional statements of the apprehended NDFB(S) militants, the brutal action against the Adivasis was carried out by a group of 12 NDFB(S) cadres. Prior to the attack, the militants held a meeting at Samabaru�s Simangpuri residence where they planned the carnage.
