Pacemaker implanted on 110-yr-old

GUWAHATI, Feb 19 � The city-based GNRC Heart Institute has successfully treated a 110-year-old heart patient by implanting a pacemaker on him � a feat being viewed as rare in medical circles.

Haji Mokbul Ali from Hojai � with a history of frequent fainting � was admitted to the hospital with heart-related complications. On examination, it was found that his heart rate was very low leading to several instances of complete heart block.

�It caused the repeated instances of fainting. He was suffering from high blood pressure too. The heart problems gradually affected his kidney and brain. So, emergency temporary pacemaker implantation was carried out on him on February 8. It stabilized the heart rate and brain functions in the patient. At that point neurological consultation was sought for the patient and on February 11, a permanent pacemaker implantation was successfully carried out on Haji Mokbul Ali,� a GNRC spokesperson said.

The GNRC spokesperson said that the GNRC Heart Institute was a fully-equipped, advanced and state-of-the art one-stop heart care centre under the banner of GNRC Hospitals. It has been successfully carrying out various complicated heart treatments over the last 13 years having competent, qualified and highly experienced cardiology and cardio thoracic surgeons available round-the-clock to provide the required care and service to the people.
