Over Rs 5 cr cash seized across State, 2 Rly men held

GUWAHATI, Oct 10 - Police on Saturday recovered more than Rs 5 crore in cash following searches in multiple locations across the State. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh said they are still trying to ascertain whether the money is linked to the Sub Inspector recruitment scam. Two railway employees � identified as Rupam Das and Debaraj Das � have been arrested, and the cash, which police said was unaccounted, was seized from four locations in Barpeta, Bongaigaon and Chirang districts.

While more than Rs 3 crore was recovered from the Abhayapuri residence of Tarani Banik, the father-in-law of Rupam Das, nearly Rs 1.7 crore was seized from the house of Debaraj Das, an employee of the NF Railway. In addition to these, Rs 3 lakh was recovered from Chirang and another Rs 15 lakh was recovered from an undisclosed location. Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said the recoveries were made based on revelations by Saroj Sarma and Rubul Hazarika, who were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in connection with the SI recruitment scam. The Assam Police chief asserted that they are leaving no stone unturned to get to the root of the scam.

Bongaigaon Correspondent adds: Police on Saturday recovered huge amounts of cash from the residences of two railway employees in Bongaigaon.

Police conducted a search operation at the residence of Rupam Das at Dolaigaon area on Friday night and subsequently detained him although they did not find any unaccounted cash or valuables in his residence. As a follow-up, police conducted a search at the residence of Das�s in-laws in Abhayapuri area and found illegal cash amounting to Rs 3.2 crore. Das is a loco pilot posted at the New Bongaigaon Railway Consumer Depot.

In another search operation on Saturday at the Railway New Colony at the residential quarters (204/A) of Pradip Mazumdar, an office superintendent of the Railway Consumer Depot at New Bongaigaon, police recovered Rs 15,46,500 in cash.

Both the employees look after the management of storage and supply of diesel for railway engines at the New Bongaigaon Railway Station. However, police did not make it clear to the media whether these raids were related to the SI recruitment scam.

A similar operation was conducted in Chirang district on Friday night at the residences of some persons related with the transportation of fuel.

Barpeta Correspondent adds: A police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Madan Kalita raided the residence of Debaraj Das at Gandhinagar in Barpeta and recovered around Rs 2 crore in cash. Das, who is an employee of Indian Railways posted at Bongaigaon, has been arrested.
