DIPHU, June 17 - Polling for the 12th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) election concluded peacefully at 4 pm today. Altogether, 168 candidates from the BJP, Congress, HSDC and Independents were in the fray. Of the 26 seats for which the poll was conducted, ten are in Diphu subdivision, nine in Hamren and seven in Bokajan subdivision. Over 65 per cent polling was reported.

The KAAC has 30 members, of which 26 are elected and four are nominated by the Governor. Casting of votes started both in West and East Karbi Anglong districts from 8 am and concluded at 4 pm. No major untoward incident was reported during the polling in the 26 MAC constituencies. Polling was conducted peacefully in all the 813 polling stations.

The polling was conducted amid tight security in all the 26 MAC constituencies of the Karbi Anglong autonomous district. Barring a few sporadic incidents of minor skirmishes, polling was by large and peaceful. The percentage of voting turnout was over 75 and 65 per cent in the East and West Karbi Anglong districts respectively.

However, the percentage of polling may increase as a few polling teams are yet to arrive at Diphu headquarters. It may be mentioned here that voters in large numbers turned out in all the polling stations despite the incessant rain since yesterday. No repolling has been ordered in the district.
