AIZAWL June 23 - As many as 1,073 petty traders in Aizawl New Market will virtually be deprived of their livelihood as the Mizoram Government plans to relocate them to makeshift locations to allow reconstruction of the badly deteriorated market building.
Commerce Minister Dr R Lalthangliana, who visited the market on Saturday explained to the traders that it was a very hard decision on government�s part to interrupt the livelihoods of almost 2,500 families.
However, he said it was mandatory for the government to dismantle the building sooner than later to avoid a major disaster and loss of lives. He assured that no trader would be left out and everyone who has a business in the building would be properly relocated at convenient places in collaboration with the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Earlier on Friday, the government had served eviction notices to the traders, for the third time since 2015.
Many traders in the New Market were worried that reconstruction of the market building would take a heavy toll in their business, which, however, was inevitable for their own safety.
�I�m certain my business would suffer heavily if I�m relocated somewhere else. But I understand the situation, and we have to leave,� said Pi Remi, who earns a living by selling vegetables in the New Market.
A joint consultation meeting between a team of officials and representatives of over 50 trade associations was held before field inspection at the Commerce and Industries department�s site office at New Market. Representations from the stakeholders along with the government's action plan were discussed at length. During his interaction with the representatives, Commerce Minister Dr R Lalthangliana promised that the traders� main concern of not retaining their seats in the new building would be properly addressed.
