By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 12 Orissa defeated Assam by 55 runs in the East Zone Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day cricket tournament at Agartala today.

Opting to bat first Orissa piled up a commendable total of 256 for six in the stipulated 50 overs and restricted Assam to 201 in 48.4 overs.

Apart from rookie Pallav Das, who scored 58 and Tarjinder Singh (43) other Assam batsmen failed to negotiate Orissa bowling. Kunal Saikia (27), Arlen Konwar (21) and Pritam Das (20) were the other batsmen who could reach double figure while other batsmen failed cheaply.

Earlier, Orissa winning the toss decided to use the track first and riding on two solid knocks by BB Samantray (97) and Paresh Patel (82) reached the handsome total. Glovesman Haladhar Das was the other notable contributors with 22. For Assam almost all the bowlers hardly could impress as Pritam Das was the only bowler who could take two wickets. Abu Naschim Ahmed, Sujay Tarafdar and Arlen Konwar took one wicket each.

Brief scores: Orissa 256/6 (BB Samantray 97, P Patel 82, H Das 22, Pritam Das 2/52).

Assam 201 (Pallav Das 58, Tarjinder Singh 43, Kunal Saikia 27, Arlen Konwar 21, Pritam Das 20, P Patel 4/31, Samantray 2/27).
