Orange Festival held at Boko

GUWAHATI, Dec 21 � The Orange Festival organised recently by the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam, in collaboration with the Kamrup District Agricultural Office at Gandhi Maidan, Boko, drew a huge crowd of farmers and others.

The daylong orange and vegetable exhibition, competitions, horticultural training, horticultural quiz, etc., were organised for the benefit of farmers. The orange and vegetable exhibition and competition were inaugurated by Pradip Kumar Choudhuri, District Agricultural Officer, Kamrup.

Noted horticultural scientist Dr Nalin Kumar Mohan inaugurated the training on orange cultivation. Dr Jogesh Nath, scientist, Horticultural Research Station, Kahikushi, Dr Kabindra Borkakoty, Director, Agriculture, Assam took part in the programme and interacted with farmers. Khagendra Sarma, Senior Agricultural Development Officer, conducted an orange quiz in the fair in which farmers participated. In his speech as the chief guest, Nilamani Sen Deka, Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Processing Minister, Assam highlighted the different achievements of the agri-horti sector of Assam and appealed to the young generation to come forward to take up modern farming.

He distributed several horticultural implements to farmers� groups under the National Vegetable Initiative for Urban Cluster and eight tractors to selected farmers� groups. He also awarded several orange and vegetable/other fruits growers in the function. SK Ray, DC, Kamrup expressed satisfaction on the recent developments in the agri-horti sector in Kamrup district.

Nirud Sarma, Deputy Director (Horticulture); Pradip Kr Choudhury, District Agricultural Officer, Kamrup; Nilamani Sarma, Executive Engineer (Agri), Kamrup; Dr DN Kalita, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Kamrup were also present.
