Orange festival gets under way

IMPHAL, Dec 7 - The 14th Orange Festival was formally inaugurated at Tamenglong on Wednesday. A series of programmes has been lined up during the five-day festival.

Speaking on the occasion Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar announced a Rs 50 lakh assistance for setting up of a cold storage facility in Tamenglong district. The facility will be set up under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture.

He stressed on awareness programmes to help farmers increase the production of oranges. He said that the Horticulture department has already sent a proposal to North Eastern Council (NEC) for increasing production of Kiwi, Kachai Lemon and pineapples in Imphal East and Churachandpur besides developing floriculture projects at Sendra in Bishnupur district, Andro in Imphal East district and Shiruiin in Ukhrul district.
