Opp to continue protest in House

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 4 Opposition leaders on Thursday stuck to their guns on the NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) issue. Unless the ministers indicted of involvement in the multi-crore-rupee scam are removed from their ministries and all the 30 departments of the Hills Council are handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for investigation, the Opposition members would continue to shout slogans inside the House, they said.

Addressing a joint press conference after the adjournment of the House for the day, leader of the Opposition Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, BJPs Rameswar Teli, AGPs Chandra Mohan Patowary, AIUDFs Dr Aditya Langthasa and Sirajuddin Ajmal, CPI-Ms Uddhav Barman, CPIs Drupad Bargohain and Independent Bhuban Pegu said that it is the duty of the Government to hand over the NCHAC scam to the CBI. The Opposition cannot do that.

Describing the removal and subsequent arrest of former Telecom Minister A Raja as a case of partisan attitude of the Congress, the Opposition leaders said that the Congress-led UPA has spared Suresh Kalmadi from such humiliation in the Commonwealth Games case as he is a Congress member.

On the issue of passing the Vote on Account proposals, they said that there should not be any problem in passing the proposals with the Opposition continuing with its agitation inside the House. Even during the Emergency, when the House is not in session, such bills are passed and salaries paid to the employees, they said. The Government may go for a voice vote to pass the Vote on Account as it has done in the case of the Governors address, said the Opposition leaders.
