Opp stages walkout in House

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 11 The Opposition legislators of the State Assembly, including Independent MLA Bhubon Pegu, staged a walkout this evening. They were resenting the failure of the Government to give satisfactory reply to their query on whether the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) construction activities would be kept in abeyance pending the final report of the expert committee being engaged by the Prime Minister to assess the projects impacts

Earlier, the Opposition legislators stalled the functioning of the House demanding clarification from the Government on the issue. The legislators of the Opposition parties went to the well of the House and shouted slogans expressing their resentment over the failure of the Government to give a satisfactory reply on the issue.

Leader of the Opposition Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged that the stand of the AGP on mega dams has been misinterpreted. The devastating impacts of the Ranganadi and Kopili Hydel Power Projects in the downstream areas have made clear how devastating the hydel projects could be.

The situation forced the Speaker to adjourn the House sine die.

Earlier in the day, the House witnessed din when some of the Congress legislators tried to shout down Bhubon Pegu during the debate on the mega-dam issue. Pegu tried to contradict some of the assertions made by Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Some of the Congress MLAs were seen advancing towards Pegu in an aggressive manner.
