GUWAHATI, Feb 5 - The Congress, AGP and AIUDF today called for adoption of a resolution against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, by the Assembly. The Opposition parties submitted separate notices for such a resolution under rules of �Private Member�s Business�.
Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami clubbed the resolutions as all of them dealt with the same matter. The resolution was listed at number five in the List of Business of the House for today, behind a �Pending Resolution� on the issue of land pattas for the indigenous people, which was listed at number four.
The Speaker said the discussion on the resolution can take place on February 22 when the House will again take up Private Member�s Business. However, members of the three parties suggested that as the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament would get over on February 13, there is a need to ensure that the resolution is discussed and adopted by the Assembly before that date. They wanted the House to take up the resolution today itself if possible.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said the government is ready to discuss the matter and clear its stand regarding the Bill, but added that the discussion on the Pending Resolution should be finished first.
AGP MLAs RN Kalita and Keshab Mahanta and Congress MLAs Debabrata Saikia and Abdul Khaleque said they will forego the opportunity to speak on the �Pending Resolution� so that there is time for taking up the resolution against the Bill.
