Opp parties trying to extract mileage from agitation: Dass

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 - Opposition parties, including the Congress, are trying to gain political leverage out of the ongoing agitation against the amended Citizenship Act and BJP leaders and workers have been physically assaulted and terrorised by mobs to force them to resign from the ruling party, said State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass here today.

Speaking to media-persons after inspecting the vandalism carried out by miscreants at the Srimanta Sarkaradeva Kalakshetra on Wednesday, Dass said that duck sellers, chicken sellers, vegetable vendors and egg sellers besides other people of suspected nationality engaged in petty jobs were responsible for the large-scale vandalism of public property witnessed in Guwahati during the last couple of days.

In Upper Assam, the Congress party is trying to make political gains using the agitation. BJP cadres, including women, are being tortured, dragged by their hair and forced to resign from the party... In Digboi, 10 of our elected municipal members were dragged by their hair and forced to resign from the party, Dass said.

He added that in Lower Assam, groups of hardline Islamic radicals are seeking to gain from the agitation.

Our party never tried to hide the fact that we will bring an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955. It has always been our commitment and we also told the public about it in the run-up to various elections.

If anybody has any objection against the Act, they are free to approach the Supreme Court, said the BJP leader.

He added that the administration was forced to impose curfew and deploy the Army on the streets because miscreants tried to hijack the protests and resorted to large-scale vandalism of public properties.

We are 100 per cent sure that no member of AASU or the Shilpi Samaj were involved in the vandalism carried out at the Kalakshetra, Dass said.

He said that as per the inputs received from the personnel at the Kalakshetra, the miscreants were speaking in a language akin to that used by people of a particular immigrant community.

We request the Chief Minister to ensure that the culprits are identified and punished without any delay. The vandalism was planned in advance and the miscreants arrived well prepared with stones and iron bars. And the incident took place even as the Governor was attending an event at the venue, said the BJP leader.

He added that the ruling party has no issues with the agitation undertaken by the AASU and other organisations in a democratic and peaceful manner, but violence and mob rule will not be tolerated.
