Opp leader says BJP has failed on all fronts

By PRANJAL BHUYAN

GUWAHATI, May 23 - Even as the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government gets ready to celebrate its second anniversary tomorrow, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia said the present dispensation has failed on all fronts and fulfilled none of the electoral promises made by it.

They promised good days and parivartan. But now, the Assamese people are fighting for their very identity and existence, Saikia told The Assam Tribune today. He said the State government has failed to deal with corruption.

Even ministers have admitted about the presence of syndicates. Recent days have witnessed many instances of law and order and terrorism-related incidents, Saikia added.

He accused the ruling BJP of harbouring some hidden agenda and cited the example of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in this regard. They said something else before the elections but now their actions are totally different, said Saikia, who is also leader of the Congress Legislature Party. He said the government is turning out to be a government of U-turns.

They assured to solve the problems plaguing the education sector within 45 days of assuming power, but the problems in the sector remain unsolved... Guwahati continues to be affected by flash floods while they talk of Smart City. Work of water supply schemes in the city is also getting delayed, said Saikia.

He alleged corruption and mismanagement in the implementation of government schemes like the Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana and said that not even a single tractor has been distributed in villages in the last two years. In other instances, they are continuing with old schemes by just changing their names. People expect better monitoring of schemes and better performance from the government, he said.

Saikia said in the name of employment generation, the government has announced training programmes but youths are not getting placements. He added that the government has been 90 per cent failure.

When pointed out that the previous Congress regime led by Tarun Gogoi had also come in for criticism over non-performance during its tenure, Saikia admitted that infighting within the grand old party had impacted the Gogoi governments performance during its final years.

But, a lot had been achieved during the first few years of our government. People will definitely compare the performance of this government with our previous governments performance. It will help us (the Congress party), said Saikia.

He added that the Congress expects good results from Assam during the Lok Sabha polls next year.
