GUWAHATI, Feb 28 � The community radio service of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University - Jnan Taranga, the first of its kind such service in the North-east, will now be broadcasting 20 hours of programme daily from tomorrow onwards. The community radio which has completed three months has been airing six hours of programme daily.
Prof Srinath Baruah, VC of the university, told the media that by extending the broadcast hours the community radio would provide wide-ranging information on a variety of subjects of educative value.
�From now, five hours would be devoted to educational programmes. In addition, an interactive hourly programme 'VC Online' will feature the VC who would answer queries from students as well as general listeners. Another interactive programme will have deputy commissioners and superintendents of police as participants,� Baruah said.
While Jnan Taranga has been broadcasting a serial on the basis of Gandhiji�s My Experiments with Truth, a programme on science 'Bijnan Barta� is scheduled to come up.
�The forthcoming programmes include �Sahitya Chora� every Sunday featuring the immortal works of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah, and several programmes on subjects like career, health, sports, justice, woman�s issues, children, etc.,� Prof Baruah said.
Another popular programme currently on (at 4 pm every Tuesday) is the radio transcription of the acclaimed novel, Asimot Jar Heral Seema by Kanchan Baruah. The varsity is also set to add some more postgraduate degree programmes in social science subjects and in some selective languages from the next academic session, in addition to the existing MMC, MBA and MCA programme.
A two-year teacher training programme (diploma in elementary education), besides a regular degree-level teachers� training programme, is also due from the next academic session.
