GUWAHATI, May 31 - The premier academic institutions of Guwahati failed to impress this year in terms of ranks in the HSSLC results declared by AHSEC today.
While the Commerce stream received a setback in the city with only two rank holders, only one student from the Science stream could secure a position this time. None of its institutions could make it to the merit list in Arts.
While the junior colleges and HS schools of different districts of Assam stole the show in the HSSLC results, among the top educational institutions of Guwahati, Ujjawal Jain of Cotton University got the 10th rank in Science and two girl students � Pratiksha Bachyas and Mritrika Nath from the Gauhati Commerce College � secured the 9th and 10th positions respectively.
The overall result of Kamrup Metro district is 88.5 per cent. Altogether 3,649 students appeared in the HS exams this year from the district, of which 3,213 students succeeded. A total of 850 students got the first division in the district.
The usual festive atmosphere celebrating the success of the rank holders was missing from the major institutions of Guwahati this year.
The Gauhati Commerce College, however, made a comeback to the merit list this year with two positions. It needs mention here that the GCC, which could not make it to the merit list last year, had secured eight ranks in 2016.
The Commerce stream being the stronghold of Guwahati, either GCC or KC Das Commerce College produces the majority of rank holders in alternate years.
�Ranks are not a yardstick to measure the success of an institution and GCC has done very well with 98.8 per cent success this year with 272 first division holders,� said Dr Homeswar Kalita, Principal of Gauhati Commerce College.
�The college, however, was expecting a better performance in terms of ranks. Ranks hold a special charm in the media and to the people in general. We, too, were hoping for at least six ranks this year,� he added.
The KC Das Commerce College, on the other hand, could not get a place in top 10. In 2017, the college had produced eight rank holders, including the topper.
�We could not make it to the top 10. However, the overall result shows that the college missed the ranks by only a few marks. Of the 284 students who appeared for the exam this year, 186 got first division,� Dr Ghana-shyam Nath, Principal of the college, said.

�I understand the importance to having a clear concept while studying. In the class also, I love to help other students understand the concepts. Teaching is a profession that appeals to me the most,� she added. Pratiksha would pursue BCom at GCC.
Mritrika Nath, the 10th rank holder in Commerce stream from the GCC, attributed her success to a well-planned study routine and guidance from the teachers of the college.
�Apart from the teachers' support, my parents took a very good care of my overall academic ambience at home. I covered my entire syllabus in a very balanced way with special emphasis on subjects that needed more time,� Mritrika, a resident of Lalganesh area of the city, said.
Apart from studies, Mritrika is fond of outdoor games and loves playing kho-kho and kabaddi. She had also won a gold medal in kabaddi in a college-level championship.
Ujjawal Jain, the 10th rank holder in Science stream from Cotton University, said regular study was the key to his success. Hailing from Tinsukia district, Ujjawal wants to become a mechanical engineer. Apart from studies, he prefers reading novels in leisure time.
