One more PPE kit found at public place

By City correspondent

GUWAHATI, May 16 - Another incident of a purportedly used personal protective equipment (PPE) being worn by members of the public came to light on Saturday.

A source at the Panbazar Police Station said that some slum children were seen with a PPE kit near Lakhtokia Gate Number 2 today. A police team was sent to the spot immediately after being informed by locals. A group of children were playing with the PPE kit. They might have got the kit from a dustbin or some nearby area. But we are not sure whether it was a used kit or a new one. The police team burned the kit on the spot, the source said.

The kit might have been dumped by some health worker who attended the train passengers at the Guwahati Railway Station after using it, the source added.

Earlier, on Thursday evening a mentally challenged man was seen roaming on the street wearing used six PPE kits in Lokhra area. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has ordered an inquiry into the Lokhra incident.

Circle Officer of Dispur revenue circle and Executive Magistrate Lakhya Jyoti Das has been entrusted to carry out a detailed inquiry to ascertain whether the PPE kits were used ones or not. Das has been asked to submit the inquiry report within a day.

According to guidelines, used PPE kits are to be disposed of (buried) by the hospitals at a proper place. However, the Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) of Fresh Air at Panikhaiti collects all COVID-related waste from the hospitals of the city.
