One killed as Nor�wester batters Tripura

AGARTALA, April 6 � One person was killed in a lighting strike today even as Tripura continues to reel under the spell of a cyclonic rainstorm.

A 54-year-old tribal woman Sushanti Reang today died at Tripurakhola Reangpara in Belonia sub division of South Tripura district after lightning struck her this morning, Officer-in-Charge, Belonia police station, Swapan Sarkar said.

Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited in a statement said more than 600 km long electricity lines were damaged and more than 1,350 electric posts were uprooted since Saturday due to hailstorm leading to load-shedding in 70 per cent areas of the State.

Massive initiatives were taken to restore normalcy, the statement said.

More than 900 houses, mostly makeshift ones, were damaged including crops and the process of assessing the damage has started, senior State Government officials said.

More than 1,000 Tripura-bound trucks were stranded in Assam�s Karimganj district due to heavy landslides on the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-44), considered to be the life-line of the State.

Director of State Meteorological department Dilip Saha said the cyclonic rainstorm would continue till the beginning of
