One killed, 3 hurt in Barpeta district

BARPETA, April 11 - One person was killed and three others seriously injured in a poll-related incident at Safakamar under Sarbhog Legislative Assembly constituency in Barpeta district this morning.

According to information, one Abdul Rashid ((80), son of Mohammad Ali, a resident of Safakamar was seriously injured when he was beaten up by the CRPF personnel on duty. He was rushed to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital later, where he succumbed to his injuries. Two CRPF personnel and another civilian named Motleb Ali, son of Ashraf Ali and a resident of Uttar Safakamar were also injured in the retaliatory attack. The CRPF personnel who received injuries are � Naval Kishore, Assistant Commandant, 161 BN C Coy CRPF, Adoc 316 BN and a constable of the same company named Amarjeet.

Barring Motleb, all the three injured were brought to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital here where Abdul Rashid succumbed to his injuries. The CRPF personnel are still undergoing treatment.

The incident occurred when the CRPF personnel tried to set in order the ruckus in front of no. 94 polling station at no. 123 Safakamar LP school under Barpetaroad Police Station in Sarbhog constituency. As alleged by the local people, the CRPF personnel on duty used force in the name of discipline in front of the polling station compelling them to resist and protest. The CRPF personnel beat up two innocent persons standing in the queue and in retaliation people pelted stones.

Meanwhile, additional police forces accompanied by high-level officers arrived on the spot and brought the situation under control. Thereafter, polling began normally.

The Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta Ashwani Kumar has informed that a magisterial enquiry will be ordered very soon.
