Obliteration of Assamese script from web challenged

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 2 - City-based general surgeon Dr Satyakam Phukan has moved the Central Public Information Officer with an online petition to direct the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India to provide copy of ISCII-88 and ISCII-91 in relation to the Government of Indias becoming a member of an American company Unicode Consortium, which is governing the scripts of the languages on the web.

Dr Phukan has been challenging the way the Unicode Consortium has obliterated the Assamese script and projected it as nothing but a corrupt version of the Bengali script. This has made Assamese language users on the web face a lot of difficulties as Assamese language could not be written in its correct form on the web.

He also pleaded that the Department of Information and Technology should be asked also to provide the information as to whether it had obtained the permission from the state governments concerned for submission of the request to the American company for obtaining its full membership.

Besides, the Union department should also be asked to provide copies of all the submissions made from its side to the American company and if any permission from the Ministry of External Affairs was obtained for the purpose, the department should be asked to provide a copy the permission.

Dr Phukan has also asked for the copy of the legal opinion obtained from the Union Law Ministry in this respect by the department.

Dr Phukan has been seeking information from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India on all such issues. But he alleges that he has been denied the information he has sought.
