By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, Jan 30 - Saraswati Puja, the festival of worshipping the Goddess of Learning according to Hindu mythology, was celebrated throughout the State with much fanfare on the second day today, as devotees thronged pandals seeking the blessings of the deity.

With rituals performed in front of Saraswati idols in the pandals, the students prayed for the deitys blessings to excel in their studies. This year, the puja has been a two-day affair with the occasion being observed at many places earlier on Wednesday. The rituals were held early in the morning, followed by distribution of prasad and also a feast of khichdi and payas at many places.

Schools, colleges and other educational institutions wore a colourful look as Saraswati Puja is considered as a festival of students. The streets of Guwahati had a vibrant look with girls being dressed in traditional mekhela-chador. Saraswati Puja gives the students of schools and colleges an opportunity to come out in their best attires and enjoy the festival with their friends.

We went to the Zoo first and to a nearby caf and had a good time with our friends, a student of Gauhati Commerce College said.

The traffic police had a tough time managing the crowds on GNB Road, GS Road, MRD Road, RG Baruah Road and many other parts of Guwahati. The Chandmari area witnessed the worst in this context due to the heavily crowded streets. Different amusement points, including parks, restaurants and the riverbank were seen teeming with young people till late evening.

The puja also causes tremendous traffic jam in many places of the city every year. It took me nearly an hour to reach Hatigaon from Christian Basti due to the heavy traffic jam in the evening, Hirakjyoti Choudhury, an employee of a private company, said.

Saraswati Puja was also celebrated on The Assam Tribune campus under the aegis of the Assam Tribune Employees Union in a befitting manner.
