Number of districts reduced in State

GUWAHATI, Oct 7 - The State Cabinet today struck down a decision of the previous Government that created the two districts of South Kamrup and East Kamrup districts, on the ground of lack of infrastructure to run the two districts.

The Cabinet in a decision in its meeting here today decided that three sub-divisions would be created out of these two districts. The new sub-divisions would be known as the Chandrapur and Sonapur sub-divisions and Chaygaon sub-division. While Chandrapur and Sonapur Sub-divisions will comprise the areas of the erstwhile East Kamrup District, Chaygoan Sub-division will comprise the areas of the erstwhile South Kamrup District, said the official sources.

The Cabinet also decided to constitute a mega mission society to accelerate rural development in the State with an allocation of Rs 30,000 crore for the purpose. This society will look after land management, development of agriculture, surface communication etc in the rural areas, and the Department of Finance will be the nodal department for the mission, sources said.

To the families of each of the martyrs of the anti-foreigners� agitation, the Cabinet decided to pay an amount of Rs 5 lakh, source said.
