DIMAPUR, Aug 7 - The Naga Students� Federation (NSF) said it would carry out its phase-I exercise to prevent influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland, especially in the wake of publication of the final NRC draft in Assam on July 30. The federation on Tuesday said student volunteers would be assigned to verify documents of non-locals in order to segregate genuine Indian citizens from illegal immigrants.
It has directed the inner-line permit (ILP) holders to carry documents like voter identity cards, Aadhaar cards, etc.
The NSF said those who cannot produce the documents, during the process of verification of ILP and other related documents, would be considered illegal immigrants. It also cautioned that the defaulters would be handed over to the district administration and police for further legal procedures.
The federation said the proposed exercise would be carried out to identify and weed out illegal immigrants while assuring that no genuine citizen of the country would be harassed in the process of the verification.
Meanwhile, the NSF has appealed to the district administration and law enforcing agencies to extend assistance and service as and when required by the student unions and their volunteers. It also requested the general public to extend cooperation to the student unions and volunteers.
The neighbouring States of Assam fear that those left out of the NRC could sneak into their territories to escape detection. Various groups in the neighbouring States have also raised the demand for updating the 1951 NRC.
