AGARTALA, Nov 18 (IANS): India's premier theatre school, the National School of Drama (NSD) is reaching out to young people in the northeast to search for hidden talent, its director Anuradha Kapur said here Friday.
"Theatre is being integrated with the normal educational system. The NSD through various means would reach out among the talented young boys and girls of far-off places of the country," Kapur told reporters.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar late Thursday evening inaugurated a NSD center in Agartala, the second of its kind after the one in Karnataka.
"To protect Indian culture, give young people a rich cultural mindset and to draw attention to unexploited traditions, the NSD has of late modified its entire programme," Kapur said.
She said the NSD would organise workshops very frequently in the northeastern states for the tribal performers, artistes and actors of the region, that would tap the unexploited talent in the state.
"The approach should be to change the mindset of the people to come out of their self-centeredness and become real human beings. Such attempts would help in creating socially conscious people," the chief minister said.
The New Delhi-based NSD, under the union ministry of culture, was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959. It became an independent entity in 1975 and has been organising drama festivalS, workshops and theatre-related programmes across the country.
