NEW DELHI, July 22 � The Centre today clarified that the issue of citizenship in Assam would be determined on the basis of the updated National Register of Citizens 1951.
Based on the proposal submitted by the Assam Government, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 288.18 crore for the NRC update, which will be completed in three years, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said in a Lok Sabha reply.
In reply to a separate question, Rijiju said that currently, the Government of Assam has set up three detention camps in Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Silchar districts for keeping illegal migrants declared by the Foreigners� Tribunal. At least 13 people declared as illegal migrants, who were detained in the detention centre in Goalpara and 17 people detained in the Dhubri Jail were deported to Bangladesh, he said.
