NPP threatens to break ties with NDA

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Feb 9 - Meghalaya Chief Minister and National Peoples Party president Conrad Sangma today said that his party would sever ties with the NDA if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha.

Addressing media persons after a general body meeting of the NPP here, Sangma said that his party today passed a resolution opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is an endorsement of the State Governments earlier resolution opposing the Bill.

We have passed a resolution against the Citizenship Bill and we will submit it to the Central Government. The party has also decided that if the Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha, the NPP will break away from the NDA, Sangma said.

The party has also decided to contest all the 24 Parliamentary seats in the region in the upcoming general elections. We will work out a mechanism and see how we can go forward, he added.
