NPF suspends party MP for voting in favour of CAB

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, Jan 8 - Naga Peoples Front president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu today suspended Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye from both primary and active membership of the party till further orders for voting in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on December 11 last year.

However, Kenye will be bound by the NPF whip on the floor of the Upper House as per the existing law and judicial decisions of the Supreme Court, Liezietsu said in the suspension order.

Liezietsu said he has suspended Kenye as per the recommendation of the NPF disciplinary action committee and in exercise of the power conferred on him as the NPF president. He said the disciplinary action committee was not convinced by the explanation rendered by Kenye to the show-cause notice issued to him on December 19 and recommended his suspension from party membership.

The NPF chief said the committee arrived at a consensus opinion that he acted contrary to the January 31, 2019 resolution of the central executive council of the party to oppose the CAB.

The disciplinary action committee had issued the show-cause notices to Kenye and Manipur Lok Sabha member Lorho S Pfoze for voting in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament despite the resolution adopted by the party to oppose the Bill.

He said in pursuance of the recommendation of the committee, a consultative meeting comprising central office-bearers, NPF legislature wing, frontal and cell heads, divisional presidents and special invitees was convened at the NPF central office in Kohima on Tuesday. Kenye was also given a special time slot to present his point of view.

The order also said Kenyes intention and conduct in addressing a press conference after receiving the show-cause notice was deplorable.

While you may have your own personal reasons in voting in favour of CAB/CAA. However, as far as the party stand is concerned, there is no change till date and the stand of the party remains the same to oppose CAB/CAA, the order said.

It said Kenyes conduct and action inside the Upper House on this particular issue do not reflect and represent the stand of the NPF in any manner.

It added Kenye wilfully refused to be subjected to party discipline which every party official signed a pledge during the time of election to any capacity of office-bearers as well as while receiving the ticket of the NPF to contest any election.
